Can stocks extend their first-quarter win streak?
abercrombie outlet NEW YORK (AP) ¡ª The zigzag in the stock market last week may leave you wondering queasily: Will this quarter build on the blockbuster gains from the start of the year or wipe them away?
History s***ests the winning streak will continue.
Over the past 30 years, strong quarters like the one that ended in March have tended to be followed by more gains. Smaller gains, usually, but gains nonetheless.
From 1982, the start of what some consider the modern era of investing, through the end of last year, there were 17 quarters in which the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 10 percent or more.
Only twice were those gains followed by a losing quarter. In both cases, the loss was small: 1.1 percent and 0.1 percent. The other 15 times, the average gain in the subsequent quarter was 6.6 percent.
The two losses both came when the economy was just emerging from recession, periods that are ripe for market bumpiness as investors try to gauge whether the worst really is behind them.
abercrombie and fitch outlet This time around, the recession has been over for almost three years. And though the market has had quarterly swings, it has moved mostly higher. Investors are betting that a steady, if unimpressive, expansion is under way.
The S&P gained 12 percent from January through March, its best first quarter since 1998. That followed a gain of 11 percent in the quarter before, from October through December.
And the record is also promising when the market racks up two consecutive double-digit quarters. It's happened three other times since 1982. Each time was followed by a third quarterly gain averaging about 5 percent.
Think of it as Newton's first law of motion applied to stocks: Objects in motion tend to stay in motion unless acted on by an external force. When investors bid the market up, they keep doing so until something stops them.
abercrombie and fitch uk The market had plenty to worry about last year ¡ª a flare-up of the European debt crisis, fear of another recession in the United States and gridlock in Washington over tax cuts and the government's borrowing limit.
This month, Europe has returned as a concern. Borrowing costs have risen for Italy and Spain, two countries with flagging economies. The S&P is down 2.7 percent since the second quarter started two weeks ago ¡ª its worst two weeks of the year.
But stocks are relatively cheap, which can be a good reason to buy. Stocks in the S&P 500 are trading at about 14.4 times earnings, according to research firm Birinyi Associates. Over the past decade, they've averaged 17.1.
Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P, says a good first quarter usually augurs a good year.
The last time the S&P blew a double-digit first-quarter lead was 1930, between a stock market crash and the worst of the Depression. That year, the S&P rose 17 percent in the first three months but plunged 40 percent in the last nine.
Of course, Silverblatt adds, "Today is today, and history is history."
abercrombie uk outlet Today, the Federal Reserve is playing an outsized role in the market's movement. The Fed's third round of bond-buying ends in June, and investors are starting to worry. Bond-buying by the Fed the past three years has stimulated the economy by keeping long-term interest rates low and has made stocks more attractive than bonds to many investors.
The Fed announced Operation Twist, a plan to drive down interest rates even further, on Sept. 21. That triggered a 29 percent rally in the S&P from Oct. 3 through April 2.
Then, last Tuesday, the Fed released minutes of a meeting in March and disclosed that it is unlikely to stimulate the economy further. Many market strategists think the economy will need more help.
And there are still unknowns that could upend the market, including the Supreme Court's decision on President Barack Obama's health care law and hotly contested changes to tax policy.
cheap abercrombie outlet uk Says Jack Ablin, chief investment officer of BMO-Harris Private Bank: "This is not a market you can put away and forget."

Ex-Wall Street bankers bring science to China's rocky stock market
Ex-Wall Street bankers bring science to China's rocky stock market
abercrombie uk SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Ex-Wall Street bankers are betting science can exploit opportunities in China's often rumor-driven stock market, with some predicting the quant-driven fund industry to grow by as much as 10-fold to 100 billion yuan within a few short years.
Former Goldman Sachs banker Shen Yi is confident his newly-launched 20 million yuan ($3.17 million) quant fund, which trades purely on complex mathematical calculations pre-programmed in computers, can beat the market.
"Models sum up history and predict the future," said Shen, who holds a doctorate degree in physics from Oklahoma State University. "Markets change, but human nature doesn't."
Since 2010, when China rolled out index futures, margin trading and short selling, more than 30 quant funds, or those that use statistical models rather than fundamental analysis to make investment decisions, have been launched, many of them by former Wall Street bankers like Shen.
abercrombie fitch There are no official or industry data on the size of China's quant fund industry, but Shen, based on his knowledge of how his rivals are doing, estimates the assets under management to be around 10 billion yuan. He believes the industry could grow 10-fold to 100 billion yuan in just three years.
These fund managers are betting that the quantitative approach, which follows a set of mathematical techniques to evaluate risk, pricing and timing of trade, can get traction in China as mutual funds str***le to make profits in a stock market which has fallen nearly 30 percent over the past 2 years.
"In a bull market, no one would listen to us. But now it's different," said Tang Weiye, who manages about 200 million yuan for quant-driven hedge fund Credence Oriental Partnership.
The fund has so far generated a return of more than 200 percent, helped largely by its short futures positions during the 2008 market slump, he said.
abercrombie sale "After all the ups and downs in recent years, investors are saying we want some modest but steady returns and don't want to suffer from market volatility," said the Stanford-educated and former IBM programmer.
But managing a quant fund in a tightly-regulated market, like China, is no easy task.
Chinese investors are only allowed to sell stocks on the second day of purchase, preventing funds from conducting intraday trading and limiting their trading man oeuvres.
Secondly, a stamp tax rate of 1 percent of transaction value is a significant hindrance for high-frequency trading, while the cost of stock borrowing for shorting purposes, according to Tang, is typically around 9 percent on an annualized basis, compared with less than 3 percent in the United States.
abercrombie outlet Another constraint is a shortage of hedging tools in China. Index futures and short selling were introduced just two years ago but with many restrictions still placed on how they can be used by institutions.
"Running a quant fund in China is not easy," said Kin-Leung Chan, managing director of Hong Kong-based China focused hedge fund Rega Technologies, which uses quant techniques to filter out investment ideas.
While fund managers hope China will introduce more policies that would benefit quant funds, regulators have so far taken a cautious stand after quantitative hedge funds were criticized for contributing to the market sell-offs during the 2010 "flash crash", when the Dow Jones index <.DJI> fell nearly 1,000 points before bouncing back in minutes.
abercrombie uk sale "It's understandable that regulators are cautious towards things that they're not familiar with," Shen said.
But the development of quant hedge funds would actually help regulators' efforts to curb excessive speculation and boost liquidity, he argued.
For example, when a certain stock is over-valued relative to its peers, certain quant models would generate and execute a sell transactions to seize on the investment opportunity.
"It's easy for investors to get emotional and prejudiced when trading, but computers don't," said Liu Zhen, former U.S.-based money manager at Brevan Howard and D.E. Shaw who now heads E Fund Management Co's quantitative investment department.
abercrombie outlet uk "Exploiting those human weakness is how quant make money." ($1 = 6.3153 Chinese yuan)

A Superhero Stampede at the "Marvel's The Avengers" Hollywood Premiere
A Superhero Stampede at the "Marvel's The Avengers" Hollywood Premiere
gucci outlet Marvel Comics fans were in heaven on Wednesday, April 11, in Hollywood, as the much-anticipated "Marvel's The Avengers" premiered at the El Capitan Theatre. For all their favorite superheroes made the scene, from Robert Downey, Jr., who reprises his Iron Man role in the action flick, to Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, the character who turned up for the first time in "Iron Man 2."
Putting on those skin-tight leather catsuits to play her character is exactly what Johansson wants to be doing at this point in her career; the 27-year-old told reporters at an earlier press conference that she's in for the long haul with Black Widow.
"It's not often that you play a character that you know you can franchise, that you know you can branch out," Johansson said. "It's a first for me, really. So, the possibilities are endless. And this character's had such a long story; she's been around for forty years, so there's a lot in there. So if the fans are into Black Widow, then I will be there. If they build it, I will come!"
gucci handbags outlet And build it they did, as writer-director Josh Whedon joined Stan Lee, Marvel's heart and soul, in creating the new film. Jam-packed with most of the company's key heroes, "Marvel's The Avengers" brought screaming crowds to Hollywood Boulevard, all out to see their favorites.
There were the heroes we've seen in earlier Marvel movies: Chris Evans, who plays Captain America; Chris Hemsworth, who is Thor; Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury; and Mark Ruffalo, the latest of a string of actors to play the Hulk. And other Marvel characters abounded on the red carpet as well: two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner who plays Hawkeye, Tim Hiddleston as Loki, and Cobie Smulders, who is best known from the hit television series "How I Met Your Mother," as Maria Hill.
Other cast members who got swept up into the night's giddy excitement included Clark Gregg, who escorted his wife Jennifer Grey; Stellan Skarsgard, who arrived along with his son, "True Blood" hottie Alexander; and producers Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige.
Famous fans of big action-adventure movies clamored for a seat in the theater, too. The Walt Disney Company now owns the Marvel franchise, so Disney channel favorites were everywhere, from Debby Ryan, Janel Parrish, Shay Mitchell to Bella Thorne and Kat Graham.
gucci shoes outlet Seth Green made the scene, too, as did Karina Smirnoff, Audrina Patridge, Mario Lopez, Aisha Tyler, Chelsie Hightower and Richard Grieco.

The shoes, which range in price from $900 to $1,500, are quickly selling out of stores. For those hoping to snag a pair, they can find them online in most sizes.

Rare chance to see Kawakubo's catwalk collection
Rare chance to see Kawakubo's catwalk collection
cheap nike shoes online Ever since taking the Paris fashion world by storm in 1981, Rei Kawakubo has enjoyed cult status and tickets to shows for her Comme des Garcons label are as precious as gold dust.
So it is a rare privilege to be able to see not just one or two models but a complete collection, what is more bang up to date, for spring-summer 2012, fresh off the catwalks last October.
"I think it is probably a world first to exhibit a whole collection that is so recent, not a retrospective" says Olivier Saillard, director of the Musee Galliera, Paris' fashion museum.
He was bowled over by the show, which Kawakubo titled "White Drama" because every single item is in shades of white and cream, and immediately asked to borrow it.
wholesale jordan shoes The Galliera is closed for renovation, so Saillard is exploring other venues to mount exhibits, including the edgy new arts and design complex, Les Docks, beside the Seine, which lent itself to a cutting-edge presentation in keeping with the clothes.
Kawakubo is notoriously reluctant to comment on her creations. "Like all great artists, she prefers you to look at her work," Saillard says, "but she did say White Drama referred to all the important stages in life - birth, adolescence, marriage and death."
The 33 pieces which comprise the collection are presented in small groups under futuristic clear plastic bubbles to protect the clothes but allow the viewer to examine them at leisure from all angles, even if they cannot be touched. A far cry from the frenetic pace of a catwalk show which is over in minutes.
adidas running shoes The intricate construction and workmanship is closer to haute couture than ready-to-wear: elongated kimono sleeves almost brush the ground, cascades of artificial flowers cup shoulders like capes or are bunched together into bouquets to form a skirt.
Some dresses have crinoline cages of satin-covered hoops. A cream wool jumpsuit is spattered with black and white graffiti or "tagging" as it is known in Paris in a nod to teenage rebellion.
Strange, other-worldly, these quasi monochrome creations, with whimsical headgear signed by other artists, unmistakably bear Kawakubo's signature, although Saillard insists that her subsequent collection for next winter was "completely different".
cheap nike free run But even the designer herself has admitted her vocabulary is limited: "Unfortunately my collections tend to be concentrated and focused on very few ideas, and this is a commercial problem. I try to get more variety but I can't and I mustn't. It is not my way," she told the then editor of Harpers & Queen Nicholas Coleridge back in 1988.
It is precisely her artistic integrity and dedication to creativity, untainted by commercial motives, that Saillard most admires.
He will go so far as to say "there hasn't been a bad collection for Comme des Garcons in the 40 years" since she created the label and found White Drama "poetic, spiritually moving."
"She is one of the most fundamental 'auteurs' of contemporary fashion," he said.
Not everyone appreciates her radical, austere aesthetic, however. WWD once tagged her designs and those of fellow countryman Yohji Yamamoto "the Hiroshima bag lady look."
nike free running shoes Visitors to the exhibition which runs until October 7 will be able to make up their own minds. |

Best in show: 6 gadgets that defined CES
Best in show: 6 gadgets that defined CES
dr dre headphones LAS VEGAS (AP) ¡ª Cheaper tablets, thinner laptops and an array of sleeker TVs stood out at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
More than 140,000 people gathered there this week, for an event that's growing despite the absence of Apple and more recently, the decision by Microsoft to make this the last year it participates.
A bevy of celebrities, including 50 Cent, Will.i.am, and Kelly Clarkson, stopped by to add glitz to the proceedings ¡ªbut they were hardly the stars of the show. Here are some of the more significant gadgets that shined at CES:
Cheaper tablets ¡ª The industry's enthusiasm for tablets was considerably tempered this year compared to last, when more than a hundred manufacturers thought they could capitalize on the iPad's success with their own models based on Google Inc.' Android software.Sales were disappointing, in large part because Apple prices the iPad relatively low compared to the cost of making it. Then, late last year, Amazon.com Inc. demonstrated that you can take on Apple by selling a smaller, barebones tablet for $199. Analysts believe Amazon sold millions of Kindle Fires in little more than a month.
beats by dre headphones Now, Asian manufacturers are hoping to jump on Amazon's bandwagon. One of those companies, Taiwan's AsusTek Computer Inc., showed off a tablet with a Fire-sized screen and said it would sell it for $249. It's considerably more powerful than the Fire, sporting a premium "quadcore" processor. Still, one of the things that made the Fire a success ¡ª Amazon's library of e-books, music and movies ¡ª will be missing.
Nokia Lumia 900 ¡ª In recent years, the world's largest phone maker, Finland's Nokia Corp., has practically been a no-show in the U.S. market. That's hurt the company badly.
Now, it hopes to come back with smartphones that run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Phone software. The Lumia 900 is its first such phone for the AT&T network, and the first Nokia phone to use AT&T's faster wireless "LTE" network. In a sign of how much is riding on these phones, both the Microsoft and Nokia CEOs showed up for Monday's announcement. The companies didn't announce price or availability. T-Mobile USA, a smaller carrier, started selling a more modest Lumia this week.
beats headphones Lenovo K800 ¡ª While Nokia's been shut out of the U.S. phone market, Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, has been shut out of phones entirely. Its PC chips use too much power to go into a smartphone: they'd drain the battery in no time. That's a big problem for the company, since PC sales are flat in the developed world, while smartphone sales are exploding. Now, Intel says a new line of chips is ready for smartphone use, and Lenovo Corp. of China is the first to take them up on it, with a smartphone to be sold in China in the second quarter. Outwardly, it's indistinguishable from any other touchscreen phone, and it runs Android.
Motorola Mobility, the phone maker that's being bought by Google, also committed to making phones and other devices with Intel chips. Without offering many details, the company said the new devices will be on the market in the second half of the year.
OLED TVs ¡ª Both LG and Samsung showed off 55-inch TVs with screens made from organic light-emitting diodes rather than the standard liquid crystals or plasma cells, and said they'll on sale this year. They didn't say what they would cost, but analysts expect the price to be upwards of $5,000.
monster beats The sets are long-awaited. OLED TVs have been on the horizon for some time, but they're difficult to manufacture in large sizes. They provide a high-contrast picture with highly saturated colors. They can also be very thin: LG's set is just 4 millimeters thick, or one-sixth of an inch.
Ultrabooks ¡ª Intel created the "ultrabook" as a marketing term for thin, light and powerful laptop computers. They're essentially the Windows versions of Apple's MacBook Air. PC makers have embraced the term enthusiastically. As a result, there were scores of ultrabook models on display at the show.
Two that stood out were the Lenovo Yoga, which has a touch-sensitive screen that bends backward to fold over completely, turning the device into a large tablet. It will launch with the new Windows 8 operating system later this year.
monster headphones The HP Envy 14 is a more conventional luxury model, and goes on sale Feb. 8, but has two details that set it apart: a sensor for Near-Field Communications Chips (which means you can transfer information from a similarly equipped phone by tapping it to the PC) and an audio chip that can communicate with some headphones to provide much better audio quality than Bluetooth. The Envy 14 will cost $1,400.
Bob O'Donnell, an analyst with research firm IDC, believes ultrabooks are "not a fad." ''We absolutely see ultrabooks as being the future of notebooks," he said. However, O'Donnell thinks ultrabooks will really take off once they are priced at about $800, closer to the price of regular laptops.
Canon G1 X ¡ª The Japanese camera maker revealed a compact camera that pushes into professional camera territory. Its G line of relatively large compact cameras has been popular among enthusiasts, and the G1 X extends the range by including an image sensor that's more than six times larger than other models in the range. Sensor size is the most important factor for a camera's image quality, far more than the number of megapixels ¡ª 14, for the G1 X. It's the first camera to use a sensor of this type, which is only 20 percent smaller than the "APS-C" sensors used in single-lens reflex cameras, or SLRs (though some luxury compacts from other manufacturers use APS-C sensors).
beats by dr dre headphones The G1 X will have a 4x zoom lens that retracts into the metal body, and will sell for $800.

Iran warns Gulf Arabs on oil
Iran warns Gulf Arabs on oil
beats by dre CAIRO (AP) ¡ª Iran warned Gulf Arab oil producers against boosting production to offset any potential drop in Tehran's crude exports in the event of an embargo affecting its oil sales, the latest salvo in the dispute between the West and the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program.
The comments by Iran's OPEC governor, published Sunday, came as Saudi Arabia's oil minister was quoted the same day denying that his country's earlier pledges to boost output as needed to meet global demand was linked to a potential siphoning of Iranian crude from the market because of sanctions.
World oil markets have been jolted over concerns that Iran may choke off the vital Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for sanctions hampering its ability to sell its oil. Saudi Arabia and other key Gulf Arab producers have recently said they are ready to provide stable and secure supplies of oil.
Iran's official news agency IRNA said Sunday that the U.S. has relayed a message to Iran about security in the Strait of Hormuz. It gave no details, and there was no immediate comment from Washington.
dre beats The U.S. recently imposed sanctions targeting Iran's central bank and, by extension, refiners' ability to buy and pay for crude. The European Union is also weighing an embargo on Iranian oil, while Japan, one of Iran's top Asian customers, has pledged to buy less crude from the country.
Mohammad Ali Khatibi, Iran's OPEC governor, was quoted Sunday by the pro-reform Shargh newspaper as saying that attempts by Gulf nations to replace Iran's output with their own would make them an "accomplice in further events."
"These acts will not be considered friendly," Khatibi said, adding that if the Arab producers "apply prudence and announce that they will not participate in replacing oil, then adventurist countries will not show interest," in the embargo.
The embargo concerns are linked to Iran's nuclear program. The West maintains Iran is enriching uranium for weapons purposes while Tehran says its program is for purely peaceful purposes such as generating electricity.
beats by dr dre Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil producer and a close U.S. ally, had said that it was ready to raise its output to accommodate global market needs. The country is the only member of the 12-nation Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries that has significant spare capacity, currently estimated at roughly more than 2 million barrels per day.
With concerns building amid the standoff between Iran and the West over Tehran's nuclear program, a string of Asian and Western officials have visited Saudi Arabia over the past week. While offering assurances that it could meet a shortfall in supply through its spare capacity, Saudi officials have also been careful to say that it was an internal matter if nations chose to abide by any sanctions.
Oil Minister Ali Al-Naimi appeared to try to further clarify the country's position in comments published Sunday in the daily Al-Ektisadiyah newspaper.
cheap beats by dre "We never said that Saudi Arabia is trying to compensate for Iranian oil in the case that sanctions (are enacted)," Al-Naimi was quoted as saying. "We said that we are prepared to meet the increase in global demand as a result of any circumstances."
The kingdom has a production capacity of 12.5 million barrels and is believed to be producing slightly over 9 million to 9.5 million barrels per day.
Iran's warning introduces a new layer of complication to an issue that has the potential for broad regional and global fallout.
"If the regional countries ... say no to what is harmful to the security of the region, then nothing will definitely happen," he said. But if the security of oil traffic in the Strait of Hormuz is violated, "all will be lost," he said.
"If these countries make a mistake and give the green light, this will be a historic green light," Khatibi said.
beats by dre studio Saudi Arabia, the Arab world's largest economy, is widely seen as the main counterweight to Iran in the region. Any attempt by Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which a sixth of the world's oil flows, would also affect the export abilities of the major Gulf producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar.
While momentum appears to be building for the sanctions by the West, China, another major buyer of Iranian oil, has come out against the measures.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was in Saudi Arabia on Saturday for meeting with officials in which the two countries "pledged to work together to further expand all-around exchanges and cooperation," according to China's Xinhua news agency
Wen said the two sides "should expand trade of crude oil and natural gas and energy-related cooperation as to deepen their energy partnership," Xinhua reported.
During the visit, Saudi state-owned oil giant Aramco and Chinese refiner Sinopec finalized an agreement to develop a 400,000 barrel per day joint venture refinery in the Red Sea city of Yanbu.
beats solo The deal is just one between China and Gulf producers as the Asian powerhouse reaches out across the world to secure energy supplies for its booming economy.

Tax cut talks focus on budget cuts, new fees
Tax cut talks focus on budget cuts, new fees
hollister kids WASHINGTON (AP) ¡ª Republicans would cut federal employee benefits. President Barack Obama would raise fees for airline passengers and eliminate Saturday mail delivery. Democrats in Congress would charge employers higher premiums for federal pension guarantees.
As Congress returns from a three-week holiday break, those are a few of the ideas for how to pay for extending an average $20-a-week Social Security payroll tax cut through the end of 2012 without adding to the government's long-term debt.
Obama and fellow Democrats insisted on taxing the wealthy to offset the deficit impact of the payroll tax cut and of providing jobless benefits to the long-term unemployed. While still useful as campaign fodder, that idea is largely a bygone one.
hollister clothing House and Senate negotiators are drawing on Obama's budget and the work of the defunct congressional supercommittee on deficit reduction to come up with the $160 billion or so needed to continue the tax cut and federal jobless benefits. Both of are set to expire Feb. 29.
Republicans controlling the House took a political drubbing in a December battle that produced a two-month extension of unemployment aid and the 2 percentage point tax cut for 160 million workers.
While House Republicans went after Democratic sacred cows such as federal worker benefits and health care spending, leading senators made progress on a bigger deal before it collapsed because of a lack of time, aides in both parties say.
Health care remains part of the equation. To prevent a 27 percent cut in Medicare payments to doctors under an outdated 1997 formula, negotiators are trying to find $39 billion in cuts elsewhere in health care spending. That would fix the problem for two years.
cheap hollister clothes Some of the money being considered to offset the lost payroll tax revenue is practically free. For example, auctioning portions of the electromagnetic spectrum to wireless companies. That would raise perhaps $16 billion over the coming decade.
Obama wants to raise $4 billion more by selling off surplus federal property. There's an additional $3 billion to be reaped by preventing state and local government workers from improperly claiming Social Security benefits.
One idea seen as likely to make it into the final package is the repeal of a tax break taken by businesses that buy corporate jets. It would raise about $5 billion over a decade.
Other ideas illustrate the uneasy trade-off of big spending cuts or new fees stretched out over a decade to finance only 10 months of a temporary tax cut.
For instance, eliminating Saturday mail delivery and other Postal Service changes raise enough money to pay for only about two months of the payroll tax cut.
hollister jeans That may seem like a bad deal for many Americans, especially retired people who don't get the tax cut. The postal reform plan was proposed by Obama and embraced by the supercommittee, but so far has been left out of the payroll tax legislation.
Similarly, an Obama plan to double the Transportation Security Administration's security fee for nonstop air travel from $5 to $10 a round-trip ticket ¡ª a sure bet to anger travelers ¡ª would raise only enough money to pay for about one month of the tax cut. It gained currency in supercommittee deliberations but is not being pressed now, according to aides in both parties.
"This is definitely a situation in which there's a lot of pain for not that much gain and that trying to do a lot of these things absent a big, broader budget deal is going to be difficult to do," said Ed Lorenzen, an analyst with the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a Washington-based group that advocates fiscal discipline. "Nickel and diming savings is not easy."
hollister sale A new $100 per flight fee on airlines and owners of private jets that would bring in more than $1 billion a year seems to be gaining momentum. So is a proposal to raise billions of dollars by making businesses with underfunded defined benefit pension plans pay higher premiums to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, which insures such plans. Many businesses and their GOP allies in Washington are resisting the proposals.
Democrats appear set to fight moves by House Republicans to require federal civilian workers to contribute 1.5 percent more of their salaries toward their pensions and absorb a third straight annual pay freeze. Obama wants to give federal workers a one-half of 1 percent pay increase in 2013.
Republicans' proposal to trim the federal workforce through retirements and attrition faces opposition from Democrats who supported it as part of a big deficit-cutting package. Politically wrenching changes to Medicare appear to be off the table.
hollister outlet "When you're talking about a major $1.2 trillion or more deficit reduction plan, there are some things you're willing to consider that you might not in the context of a much smaller agreement," said one Democratic negotiator, Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland.
Despite powerful opposition from the Democratic-leaning Hispanic community, Republicans appear likely to win a provision that would save at least $9 billion by blocking illegal immigrants from claiming the refundable child tax credit. A separate proposal would raise billions of dollars by imposing Social Security taxes on some foreign temporary workers now exempt from them.
Lawmakers already have snapped up $36 billion in projected receipts over the coming decade to finance the two-month jobless benefits and payroll tax extension enacted just before Christmas. The money comes from a 0.10 percentage point increase in home loan guarantee fees charged by mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that promises to increase the cost of a typical $200,000 mortgage by more than $5,000 over 30 years.
hollister clothes One thing Democrats are loathe to do is revisit the overall cap on day-to-day agency budgets set under last summer's budget and debt limit deal. That makes it more difficult to bank savings from cutting the federal workforce.
House Republicans hope for some victories for conservatives, such as letting states test unemployment benefit applicants for drugs and preventing welfare recipients from using ATMs in ******s, strip clubs or liquor stores to collect their benefits. GOP lawmakers also prefer maximizing spending cuts to raising fees.
Republicans promise to try to make sure the package is funded more with real spending cuts than new fees or easy money such as spectrum auctions. But they don't seem to be spoiling for a fight.
"Given the work that has already been done, there is no reason this bill cannot be completed swiftly and with little acrimony," said Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "
hollister shirts Frankly, the only way this process will not go smoothly and through regular order is if the White House chooses to disrupt it for political reasons."

It's earnings vs Europe for stocks
It's earnings vs Europe for stocks
hollister shirts NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock investors will return to a tug of war between signs of domestic strength and overseas concerns this week as a batch of critical earnings reports look to add credence to the idea the economy is improving, while credit rating downgrades in Europe will keep that region's difficulties in view.
Bank stocks will probably once again be a primary focus, as not only will European issues call the group's profit outlook into question, but many key names report results.
Equities have recently undergone a decoupling with respect to Europe's sovereign debt crisis as signs of progress in the euro zone, along with improving U.S. data, have pushed Wall Street higher on improved growth prospects. Financials have been a beneficiary of that rising tide, with Bank of America up about 20 percent since the start of the year.
hollister clothing So far this month, the S&P 500 <.SPX> is up 2.5 percent, while the Dow <.DJI> is up 1.7 percent and the Nasdaq <.IXIC> is up 4.1 percent.
"We're going to see more volatility in the weeks ahead with tension between earnings and Europe," said Christopher Sheldon, the Boston-based director of investment strategy at BNY Mellon Wealth Management, which oversees $171 billion globally.
"We want to see Europe resolved, but there will continue to be ups and downs, and while earnings will continue to be relatively good, we do expect slowing compared with 2011."
However, the uncertainty about Europe returned in a big way on Friday after Standard & Poor's downgraded the ratings of nine of the 17 euro-zone countries, including France, Italy and Spain after the market closed.
hollister sale Talk of the downgrades spurred a selloff that erased most of the gains for the week, when the S&P rose for four straight sessions.
The downgrades could exacerbate the euro zone's difficulties and bring concerns about how they might affect U.S. banks' profits back to the forefront.
Still, market participants looking for signs of strength don't have to look far. Data has been bullish lately, including Friday's consumer sentiment reading at an eight-month high that sharply exceeded what was anticipated.
"The prospect of a downgrade has been around for a while, so despite today's reaction, everyone was aware of the potential, and I don't think it will be as impactful, especially as corporate business trends remain strong," said Hank Herrmann, chief executive of Waddell & Reed Financial Inc in Overland Park, Kansas.
hollister uk HINTS OF BETTER TIMES AHEAD
Earnings reports from numerous bellwethers could reinforce the growth story. Bank of America Corp , General Electric Co , Intel Corp , Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Microsoft Corp are among the names set to report.
Early reads have supported the idea that better times lie ahead. JPMorgan Chase & Co said the domestic economy was strengthening even as its profit fell 23 percent, while Alcoa Inc rallied earlier in the week after giving a bullish outlook for the aluminum sector.
"Banks will be an important part of the story, especially with Europe in the picture, and investors will also be looking at names like GE, which have global exposure, to see what insights can be gleaned from that," said Herrman, who helps oversee $90 billion in assets.
hollister The U.S. stock market will be closed on Monday in observance of the U.S. holiday honoring the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the slain civil rights leader.
When trading resumes on Tuesday, Wall Street will watch a number of economic indicators to gauge the strength of the recovery. Data scheduled for release in the abbreviated week includes the New York Fed's Empire State Index on January manufacturing, the December readings on the U.S. Producer Price Index and the Consumer Price Index, as well as December housing starts and December existing home sales.
hollister hoodies For the past week, the Dow rose 0.5 percent while the S&P 500 gained 0.9 percent and the Nasdaq added 1.4 percent.

Natural gas price plunge aids families, businesses
Natural gas price plunge aids families, businesses
abercrombie and fitch sale NEW YORK (AP) ¡ª The price of natural gas is plummeting at a pace that has caught even the experts off guard.
A 35 percent collapse in the futures price over the past year has been a boon to homeowners who use natural gas for heat and appliances and to manufacturers who power their factories and make chemicals and materials with it.
The country is flush with natural gas as a result of new drilling techniques that have enabled energy companies to tap vast supplies that were out of reach not so long ago. The country's natural gas surplus has been growing even as the country burns record amounts.
This winter's warm weather slowed the growth in demand, however, and created a glut. In the Northeast, December was the fourth warmest in the last 117 years. Winter supplies are 17 percent above their five-year average.
abercrombie and fitch uk The natural gas futures price fell 13 percent last week, to $2.67 per 1,000 cubic feet. That's the lowest winter-time level in a decade.
"The market has been overwhelmed with gas," says Anthony Yuen, a commodities analyst at Citibank.
He and other analysts expect the price to average near $3 for all of 2012. If the weather stays mild, the price could even dip below $2, a level not seen since 2002.
Cheap natural gas is mainly a good thing for the economy:
¡ª More than half of U.S. households use natural gas for heat, and a quarter of the nation's electricity is made from it. Falling heating and electric costs are offsetting the impact of high gasoline prices and enabling families and small businesses to spend on other things. Residential gas and electric customers are saving roughly $200 a year, according to a study by Navigant Consulting.
abercrombie sale ¡ª For companies that make plastics, fertilizer and other chemicals derived from natural gas, the falling prices are nothing short of a windfall. The same goes for makers of products from steel to bricks to beer. All use a lot of natural gas to heat their furnaces. U.S. manufacturers are becoming more competitive globally as a result of the country's cheap natural gas, industry officials say.
Some industries aren't cheering, though.
With electricity prices falling, the profits of all electric power producers ¡ª whether they rely on coal, nuclear or wind ¡ª are shrinking.
Companies that drill solely for natural gas are earning less these days, too. That's prompting some to hunt instead for oil, whose price is near $100 a barrel.
Still, drillers aren't reducing natural gas production as much as they would have during previous periods of low prices. They've found ways to produce the fuel at much lower cost so they can be profitable at much lower prices. And, in many cases, natural gas is a byproduct of oil drilling, which is so profitable that companies are going after every barrel they can find.
abercrombie and fitch sale uk Analysts say in some oil and gas fields, drillers could give the gas away and still be hugely profitable just from selling the oil.
The benefit of falling natural gas prices to homeowners is not as big as a major drop in oil and gasoline prices would provide. The average household's annual gasoline bill is about $4,000, roughly double the average annual gas and electric bill.
Also, the fuel cost is only half of a customer's bill. The rest is transmission and delivery charges, which don't change along with fuel prices. Homeowners are paying $10.18 per 1,000 cubic feet of gas on average, including transmission and delivery charges, according to the Energy Information Administration. Over a year, a customer will burn an average of 75,000 cubic feet, or about $760 worth.
The multi-year drop in natural gas prices caught most industry experts by surprise.
abercrombie and fitch uk sale In the middle of the last decade, natural gas looked to be in short supply. Production in the U.S. was slowing, imports from Canada were rising and plans for importing liquefied natural gas from the Middle East and elsewhere were drawn up.
Natural gas futures hit nearly $15 in 2005. Chemical and metals manufacturers were shutting U.S. factories and moving overseas, where gas was abundant and cheaper. Farmers in need of fertilizer were turning to inexpensive imports from Canada, Trinidad and Asia.
But over the next few years, drillers perfected methods first tried in 1981 that now allow them to profitably extract gas trapped in shale formations ¡ª layers of fine-grained rock that in some cases have trapped ancient organic matter that has cooked into oil and natural gas.
Engineers combined the ability to drill horizontally into shale with a technique called hydraulic fracturing. Millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals are pumped into wells to break rock and create escape routes for the gas. In doing so they unlocked natural gas deposits deep underground across the East, South and Midwest that are large enough to supply the U.S. for decades.
abercrombie sale uk This eventually turned the shortage into a glut, and reversed the fortunes of some industries.
An ammonia plant owned by CF Industries in Donaldsville, La., that was shuttered by its former owner in 2004 is running again. Steel maker Nucor Corp. is building a factory in Louisiana; Shell Oil Co. is planning a petrochemical plant in Appalachia; and Dow Chemical is building a type of chemical feedstock plant it hasn't built in the U.S. since 1995.
"A whole slice of American industry is benefiting," says Steve Wilson, the CEO of CF Industries, which makes ammonia and other fertilizer ingredients. CF Industries, which is based in Deerfield, Ill., has seen its daily natural gas costs fall from $6 million to $2 million over the past few years. The company is planning to spend more than $1 billion expanding its U.S. plants.
While industrial customers are betting on low prices for years to come, things could change if demand increases sharply because of extreme weather or faster-than-expected economic growth, or if the U.S. begins exporting gas. It's also possible that natural gas drilling could be curtailed by environmental regulations designed to protect drinking water from hydraulic fracturing.
Legislators in New York and New Jersey have banned hydraulic fracturing temporarily, and the Environmental Protection Agency is studying it and may propose national regulations.
The most likely near-term scenario is that prices keep falling, according to Rusty Braziel, an analyst at Bentek Energy.
abercrombie uk "This ain't the bottom," he says.

Late-night talks end as Nigeria fuel strike looms
Late-night talks end as Nigeria fuel strike looms
abercrombie and fitch sale ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) ¡ª Late-night negotiations Sunday between Nigeria's government and union officials again failed to bring an end to a crippling nationwide strike over high fuel costs, as the oil-rich nation's president alleged provocateurs could be attempting to hijack protests to make the country unstable.
President Goodluck Jonathan and leaders left the meeting at Nigeria's presidential palace in the capital Abuja without offering details of the talks to waiting journalists. Early Monday morning, Nigeria Labor Congress President Abdulwaheed Omar told journalists the union would halt street protests at Jonathan's request after the leader claimed the protests could become violent.
abercrombie sale uk "He appealed to labor, considering the fact there have been serious security reports which indicated there are people outside ... that will try and hijack the street protests," Omar said.
Omar did not offer specifics on what evidence Jonathan provided to convince unions of the threat. Jonathan had been scheduled to give a speech to be aired at 9 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) Sunday on state-run television, but the time passed without any message. The presidency later said a speech by the leader would air at 7 a.m. (0600 GMT) Monday.
The strike began Jan. 9, paralyzing the nation of more than 160 million people.
abercrombie sale The root cause remains gasoline prices: Jonathan's government abandoned subsidies that kept gasoline prices low on Jan. 1, causing prices to spike from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter).
The costs of food and transportation also largely doubled in a nation where most people live on less than $2 a day.
Anger over losing one of the few benefits average Nigerians see from living in an oil-rich country led to demonstrations across the nation and violence that has killed at least 10 people. Red Cross volunteers have treated more than 600 people injured in protests since the strike began, officials said.
abercrombie and fitch outlet Jonathan and other government officials have argued that removing the subsidies, which are estimated to cost $8 billion a year, would allow the government to spend money on badly needed public projects across a country that has cratered roads, little electricity and a lack of clean drinking water for its inhabitants. However, many remain suspicious of government as military rulers and politicians have plundered government budgets since independence from Britain in 1960.
The strike also could cut into oil production in Nigeria, a nation that produces about 2.4 million barrels of crude a day and remains a top energy supplier to the U.S. A major oil workers association threatened Thursday to stop all oil production in Nigeria at midnight Saturday over the continued impasse in negotiations.
abercrombie outlet However, the Nigeria Labor Congress said the association had held off on the threatened production halt.
Oil workers association president Babatunde Ogun and other union officials could not be reached for comment Sunday.
The association's ability to enforce a shutdown across the swamps of Nigeria's southern delta to its massive offshore oil fields remains in question. Much of Nigeria's land-based oil fields remain largely automated and an increasing amount of production comes from large offshore oil fields far from the country's coasts. However, any perceived impact on production could cause oil futures to rise as trading begins in stock markets Monday.
abercrombie and fitch uk Fears of tightened global supplies could raise oil prices by $5-$10 per barrel on futures markets in the upcoming week. Gasoline prices would follow, rising by as much as 10 cents per gallon and forcing U.S. drivers to spend an additional $36 million a day at the pump.
The Nigeria Labor Congress and the Trade Union Congress called for a brief hiatus on demonstrations this weekend, allowing Nigerians to leave their homes to stock up on gasoline, food and other supplies. However, the mood remains tense in a nation already uneasy over recent sectarian attacks by a radical Islamist sect that have killed at least 67 people since the start of the year, according to an AP count.
abercrombie outlet uk The unions addressed that concern in a statement Sunday, saying: "We are ... not campaigning for 'regime change.'"
"The labor movement is wedded to democracy, therefore, anybody or group that wants a change in the political leadership of the country at whatever level should do so through the ballot box," the groups said.
However, tension could be felt at an Armed Services Remembrance Ceremony held Sunday in Abuja. The program, aired live on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority, showed a somber Jonathan attending. An announcer also tried to relax the crowd ahead of a 21-gun salute in a nation with a history of coups against civilian governments.
abercrombie and fitch uk "Please, it is a part of the ceremony, don't panic," the announcer said.

UK, Hong Kong team up to boost London as yuan centre
abercrombie and fitch uk LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is teaming up with Hong Kong to secure London a top spot as an offshore trading centre for the Chinese currency, as the UK aims to boost trade and investment ties with fast-growing Asian markets.
In a speech at the Asia Financial Forum on Monday, Britain's finance minister George Osborne also urged countries to fight protectionist tendencies and repeated Britain's willingness to add further funding to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Speaking only days after ratings agency Standard & Poor's downgraded a number of euro zone countries including France, Osborne applauded progress made by the euro area though he urged further actions to restore sustainable finances and growth.
abercrombie outlet Britain's coalition government has launched a drive to expand trade and investment ties with major developed and emerging economies outside Europe to lessen its dependence on trade with the crisis-hit euro zone.
"I believe that we can make Britain the home of Asian investment and Asian finance in Europe," Osborne said, according to the text of his speech, which kicks off his official program during a trip to China and Japan.
The British government's aim was for London to complement Hong Kong in becoming a major offshore centre for the yuan, the Treasury said in a press release.
Britain's finance ministry and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) would facilitate a private-sector forum to explore synergies, specifically looking at clearing and settlement systems, market liquidity and the development of new products denominated in yuan.
abercrombie sale Britain won the Chinese government's backing for London to become an offshore trading centre for the yuan last year.
Osborne welcomed a recent announcement by the HKMA that it will significantly extend the operating hours of its yuan payments systems to better accommodate European transactions, making it easier for transactions in London to be settled.
London would join other centers, including Singapore and Taipei, which are vying for a share of the growing offshore yuan business. But all are expected to have to play second fiddle to Hong Kong as Chinese authorities push on with a series of initiatives to internationalize the currency.
IMF FUNDING
cheap abercrombie clothes Osborne will meet the finance ministers and central bank governors of China and Japan as well as Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and investors during his trip aimed at strengthening ties in financial services, infrastructure and innovation.
Britain is close to recession again as the government's tough spending cuts aimed at erasing the huge budget deficit bite and the crisis in the euro zone - its main trading partner - weighs on exports and business confidence.
"The euro zone has made progress in recent months, in particular the provision of liquidity to banks by the ECB," Osborne said. "But of course there remains more to do, as the euro area itself acknowledges."
The international community had to make sure that the IMF had the tools and resources to promote global economic stability, Osborne said.
abercrombie and fitch kids Last week, Osborne said Britain may increase its contribution to the fund together with major non-European countries such as China or Japan, but ruled out higher contributions if they were earmarked to prop up the euro zone.
"The IMF does not belong to any one region of the world," Osborne said in his speech. "Its role is to support countries which get into difficulty, not currencies."
Presenting his international agenda for 2012, Osborne vowed to push for trade liberalization, using "new and innovative alternative approaches" as the World Trade Organization's global approach was stuck at a "significant impasse".
abercrombie and fitch sale Britain would also work to ensure that global standards for financial regulation would be implemented, he said, repeating his rejection of a financial transaction tax on a European level, which France and Germany have been seeking.

abercrombie and fitch uk LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is teaming up with Hong Kong to secure London a top spot as an offshore trading centre for the Chinese currency, as the UK aims to boost trade and investment ties with fast-growing Asian markets.

HK protesters demand D&G apologize for photo ban
HK protesters demand D&G apologize for photo ban
louis vuitton outlet HONG KONG (AP) ¡ª Occupy Dolce & Gabbana? A Hong Kong outlet of the Italian fashion label has been the target of repeated protests because residents claim the store's staff have discriminated against them.
News reports earlier this month said sales staff were preventing Hong Kong people ¡ª but not mainland Chinese or foreigners ¡ª from taking photos of the shop windows from the sidewalk.
A rally outside the store last week drew hundreds of protesters. Several dozen people protested Sunday, taping posters on the glass saying "Apologize or get out," and placing an oversized papier-mache camera in front of the door. The shop appeared to be closed.
"You're selling a brand that people respect and want to buy but they're not living up to that" standard, said Steven Chan, a 29-year-old engineer. "They definitely need to say sorry."
People also have posted angry comments on the company's website and Facebook page.
louis vuitton outlet Dolce & Gabbana said in a statement last week that it "has not taken part in any action aiming at offending the Hong Kong public."
Local newspapers published photos of sales staff at the shop trying to stop photographers from taking shots. In one case, a staff member even threatened to smash a photographer's camera if he didn't stop, one news report alleged. But D&G denied that "controversial statements" by the Hong Kong press were made by shop staff.
The protest highlights simmering resentment among local residents over the growing influence that wealthy mainland Chinese have over the city, a former British colony that has been a semiautonomous Chinese territory since 1997.
Some Hong Kongers have complained that newly wealthy Chinese mainlanders have pushed up housing prices by buying up properties for speculation. They've grumbled about tens of thousands of mainland women coming across the border to give birth, depriving local women of hospital beds in maternity wards, and even for creating shortages of essentials like baby formula. www.louisvuittonoutletlead.com

Same-store sales seen up 3.4 percent in December
Same-store sales seen up 3.4 percent in December
hollister jeans (Reuters) - When top U.S. retailers post their December sales this week, Wall Street analysts expect them to report a healthy end to the holiday season, helped by discounts, improved consumer sentiment and tactics such as extended hours and layaways.
Some 22 major chains, from Macy's Inc and Target Corp to Costco Wholesale Corp and Gap Inc, should post an aggregate 3.4 percent increase in December sales at stores open at least a year, according to Thomson Reuters, capping a season that started moderately but gained steam in December.
The big challenge for retailers this holiday season was how to attract shoppers without decimating margins.

"Ever since the recession, retailers have had to do a lot more to get shoppers to open their wallets," said Catherine Moellering, an executive vice president at retail consulting firm Tobe.
Companies such as Macy's, which offered a lot of exclusive merchandise, were better able to hold on to their pricing power, she said.
Other top gainers are expected to be discount chains such as Costco, with its cheaper gasoline, and Target as shoppers sought out low prices.
Higher up the price spectrum, chains such as Saks Inc, and Nordstrom Inc should also do well, helped by the continued recovery of high-end spending and a stock market that rebounded after swooning earlier in the fall.
hollister clothing Overall sales picked up in the second half of December and Macy's and Victoria's Secret parent Limited Brands Inc have enjoyed better-than-expected sales this holiday season, said Nomura Equity Research analyst Paul Lejuez.
J.C. Penney Co Inc was one of the most "promotional" retailers in the days after Christmas, he said.
Penney and Gap, which are under pressure to slash prices to lure price-conscious shoppers, are expected to be laggards again after seeing sales declines in November.
Penney comparable sales should be up 0.2 percent, while Gap's are expected to slip 1.2 percent, hurt by a 2.7 percent drop at its low-price Old Navy chain, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Kohl's Corp will also be closely watched after a unexpected and sharp drop in same-store sales for November. Analysts expect its December same-store sales to rise 2.3 percent after a gain of 3.9 percent in December 2010.
If December sales for the 22 chains meet expectations, that would be just above December 2010's 3.1 percent jump.
Earlier reports s***ested December was shaping up to be a good month, helped by last-minute shopping and strength after Christmas Day. The ICSC/Goldman Sachs weekly chain store sales index rose 4.5 percent during the week ended December 24.
cheap hollister clothes The National Retail Federation in mid-December raised its sales forecast to a 3.8 percent increase for November and December, from 2.8 percent, based in part on a strong start to December.
November same-store sales rose 2.9 percent, according to the Thomson Reuters index, missing analyst forecasts, despite a record turnout on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that puts the season into high gear.

MARGINS UNDER PRESSURE
hollister outlet The same-store sales number does not include results from major chains such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Best Buy Co Inc and Sears Holdings Corp and therefore only gives a partial snapshot of the retail season.
Wal-Mart's discount chain alone counts for 11 percent of total U.S. retail sales. When the company, which stopped reporting monthly results in 2009, was included in the Thomson Reuters index, it accounted for 50 percent of the tally.
Last quarter, Wal-Mart finally broke a nine-quarter streak of U.S. same-store sales declines.
Janney Capital Markets expects that improvement to continue in the holiday quarter with a rise of 1.9 percent, helped by its layaway program, which allows shoppers to pay in installments.
hollister sale Retail sales rose 5.2 percent during the 2010 holiday season despite weakness at Wal-Mart. Strong sales at Wal-Mart will be crucial to declaring this season a winner for U.S. retailers.
But in spite of better consumer spending, it was a competitive season that saw chains try to undercut each other through low prices, compromising margins.
The pressure to give deals even after Christmas was on full display last week at Champlain Centre mall in Plattsburgh, New York. Victoria Secret was offering a 'Buy 1 get 1 50 percent off' deal on select bras, while Old Navy was selling jeans for adults for $15 and kids jeans for $10.
The level of discounting this holiday was "of concern," Tobe's Moellering said.
"How do we get consumers to pay full price ever again?" she said.
hollister kids One potential dark cloud for chains that are reliant on clothing sales, such as Macy's, Penney and Kohl's is the warm December across much of the country that likely dented sales of cold-weather gear.

RIM close to stripping CEOs of chairmanship: report
RIM close to stripping CEOs of chairmanship: report
hollister uk TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion is close to a decision on stripping its co-chief executives of their other shared role as chairman of the board, a newspaper said on Tuesday, a change that could meet a key demand from angry and disillusioned investors.
The National Post newspaper, citing "sources familiar with events," said Barbara Stymiest, currently an independent member of RIM's board, is leading the race to replace Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie in the chairmanship.
RIM shares jumped more than 7 percent on investor hopes that the str***ling BlackBerry maker was listening to increasingly strident demands for change.
hollister clothing "Any talk about an independent chairman is going to give this company a boost. It will increase the likelihood the value of this company will be unlocked," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis.
"It breaks the stranglehold the current CEOs and co-chairs have on the company."
But other analysts doubted Stymiest, if named to the chairmanship, would actually assume the transformational role that activist shareholders are calling for.
Lazaridis and Balsillie, RIM's second and third-largest shareholders with a little more than 5 percent of the stock apiece, are currently in the unusual position of sharing the two top-tier positions, as chairman and as CEO.
They have resisted large-scale change so far, even as investor pressures mounted as the shares tumbled 75 percent last year after a series of profit warnings, and the botched launch and dismal sales of its PlayBook tablet computer.
hollister sale RIM, which is also facing a slump in BlackBerry sales in the important U.S. market, on Tuesday extended its steep discounting of the PlayBook, offering each of the three storage sizes at a flat $299 until early February.
A 16 GB version initially sold for $499, matching the price of Apple's popular iPad, while the 64GB version was $699. RIM sold around 850,000 PlayBooks from its launch in April until late in November, a tiny fraction of iPad sales.
LOOKING AT OPTIONS?
The precipitous RIM share-price drop in 2011 prompted calls by some analysts and investors for RIM to consider strategic alternatives such as a split or an outright sale of the company.
Sources told Reuters last month that Amazon.com and other suitors had considered making a bid for RIM, but the board wanted to focus on a turnaround instead.
hollister shirts RIM, based in Waterloo, Ontario-based, in June agreed to study its unusual corporate structure and report back to investors by the end of January.
RIM did not respond directly to the National Post report, but said a committee of its seven independent directors was on track to deliver recommendations by January 31. That committee includes Stymiest, who has sat on the RIM board since 2007 and who is one of Canada's most successful businesswomen.
Analysts were not sure if Stymiest could herald the more radical change activist investors want if she took over as chair, or if such a change would just be more window-dressing at a company that has earned a reputation for over-promising and under-delivering.
hollister "She's being thrust into the limelight to appease shareholders. It doesn't really do much for me personally," said Matthew Thornton, an analyst at Avian Securities in Boston. "This one action doesn't solve anything, in my mind," he said.
FORMER HEAD OF TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGE
Trained as an accountant, Stymiest was a partner at Ernst & Young, then chief financial officer of Bank of Montreal's Nestbitt Burns investment bank before becoming head of the Toronto Stock Exchange in 1999.
In her five years as chief executive of Canada's largest stock market, she shepherded the bourse through one of the most transformative periods in its 150-year history.
hollister hoodies She brought the exchange public in 2002, expanded the company into bond and energy trading, and acquired the resource-focused Canadian Venture Exchange, making the Toronto exchange a mining and energy powerhouse.
Notably for RIM investors and customers weary of BlackBerry network outages, Stymiest put an end to an embarrassing series of technical glitches that had plagued the exchange after it went electronic in 1997.
Stymiest left the exchange late in 2004 to become chief operating officer at Royal Bank of Canada, making her the apparent front-runner to eventually replace CEO Gord Nixon as the first female bank CEO in Canada.
But Stymiest appeared to lose influence at the bank, and was shifted to a lesser executive role in 2009. She left RBC, the country's largest lender, last year.
RIM shares were 8.1 percent higher at $15.67 on the Nasdaq and up 7 percent at C$15.83 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. http://www.ukhollistersale.uk.com/Hollister-Hoodies-women-sale-2011
