ChemicalMarijn ChemicalDekkers, chairman of Bayer, at the company*s annual innovation strategy briefing yesterday in Leverkusen Chemicalsrounded on policy makers and the public for not understanding the true benefits of chemistry and the quality of chemica buying leadslife that certain chemicals can bring. This misunderstanding is curbing the ability of Bayer to build new plants in countries such as the U.S. and across Europe, he says. ※Particularly in Germany, we are currently experiencing what in some cases are very emotional 每 one could say almost &irrational* discussions about industrial projects and innovation,§ he says. ※These days, anyone intending to construct a new industrial facility or introduce a new technology to the market can expect to encounter considerable public resistance. All too frequently, only the risks are discussed and rarely the opportunities.§ He*s got a ptory Chemicals and the chemical industry still have a poor public image despite inventions by the chemical industry of materials for wind turbines, photovoltaic cells, insulation of buildings, and lightweight materials for more energy efficiency automotives, and more. Bayer is involved in the production of all of the above and says it still struggles to put over a positive image. The position held by Bayer, Chemical Suppliersand indeed the chemical industry, is backed up by the findings of a 2009 McKinsey study, which concluded that on average, approximately 3 m.t. of the greenhouse gas (GHG) CO2 is prevented from being released to the atmosphere for every 1 m.t. of GHG emitted in chemical production. The chemical industry is a net saver of GHG emissions. 6:54 AM - 1/19/2011 - comments {0} - post commentL-ArginineIt*s a good 2-Amino-3-hydroxypyridine story to tell. According to Peter Natkanski, Syngenta*s head of health, safety and environment, ketoconazole talking to CW earlier this year, it*s the best story industry has ever had to tell and one that industry should be telling to the biggest audience possible. Arguably, industry has yet to make a good job of telling the story at the United Nations climate summit taking place this week at Cancun, Mexico. When I asked Dr Dekkers L-Arginine yesterday what outcome he wanted from the climate summit he passed the question over to board member and right hand man Wolfgang Plischke. Plischke*s response was emphatic 每 that Bayer is taking its responsibilities seriously when it comes to GHG emissions reduction and that the company is manufacturing goods that can enable mitigation against global warming. His answer to the question is that Bayer wants the representatives of the 200 or so countries gathered in Cancun to hammer out a global agreement to curb climate change. The problem is that reaching agreement 每 with just two days of negotiations left and seemingly diverse positions held by leading nations 每 is hiHexadecyltrimethylammonium bromideghly unlikely. The negotiators for some time now have needed every kind of persuasion they can get. Industry does have some presence in Cancun, and one of its big guns 每 Dow Chemical*s Andrew Liveris - has been in town talking to the likes of Felipe Calderon, the president of Mexico. Liveris also has been presenting industry*s case relating to climate change in public discussions. Undoubtedly, his presence in Cancun, aloMagnesium atomic absorption standard solutionng with that of other industry leaders, is needed if the &good* story about the chemical industry is to be learned. Liveris has not been on his own out in Cancun. But if chemical companies, including Bayer, want to be taken seriously as a force for good and new chemical plants are to be welcomed by communities in the west then, surely Cancun - not Leverkusen - is where Dekkers should have been this week? 6:52 AM - 1/19/2011 - comments {0} - post commentNicotinic acidDespite Nicotinic acidthe obvious dangers of handling 2-Amino-5-chloropyridinehazardous materials, cis-Dichlorodiamineplatinum(II)the chemical industry in the developed world is one of Caffeinethe safest manufacturing sectors. Indeed, in Finland, for example, it is the number one when it comes to occupational Amorphous silica safety. As Aimo Kastinen from the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland points out, an increasing number of companies canAmmonium bromide report a zero result when calculating the number of accidents each year, although the average result is still 10 accidents/million working hours in 2009, for example. But even performance that matches this level is not reflected in other regions of the world, particularly amongst the developing nations. A report from China at the end of 2010, for example, recorded that at least five workers werebornan-2-one killed and a further eight injured in an explosion at a pharmaceutical plant in Yunnan province. This followed five deaths at a Chinese chemical plant in September 2010 and numerous other incidents during the year. But despite this less than satisfactory situation within the global chemical industry, other industry sectors have a trans-4-Hydroxy-L-proline much worse safety record. According to the International Labour Organisation, as many people are killed on construction sites across the world as die as a result of armed conflict. In real terms, this means that at least 60,000 people/year are killed on construction sites around the globe 每 around one death every 10 minutes - a staggering figure that equates to almost one in five of all fatal workplace accidents. And this does not include those who are injured or those that are exposed to hazardous substances in the course of their work. The international chemicalCalcium acetate industry sees construction as one of its major markets and as such it should and does take great care that the products it supplies are safe to use in the indicated manner. Unfortunately it cannot police the use of its products, especially when shortcuts are taken with regard to safe usage, whether deliberate or accidental. Safety is one of the most 2-Butanoneimportant aspects of the chemical industry*s Responsible Care programme and the industry is justifiably proud of its reputation. But this success in the developed world needs to be replicated around the world and what better time than in this International Year of Chemistry 6:47 AM - 1/19/2011 - comments {0} - post commentFluconazoleEating more Calcium bis(dihydrogen phosphate) fruits and vegetables is unlikely to protect against cancer, according to the unlikely headline of a 13 Hydrochlorothiazide December news report on Science Daily. In fact, according to the Oxford University researchers who carried out a recent study of cancer risks, there is no convincing evidence that eating more fruit and veg can reduce chances of developing cancer 每 Sodium hydrosulfitealthough they are important for maintaining a healthy diet. After years of being told that fruit and veg are important 每 in factMagnesium sulfate heptahydrate I myself wrote a feature on the anticancer benefits of brassicas, notably Brussels sprouts for the current Fluconazole issue of C&I (2010, 24, 17) 每 now it seems that we are being told just the opposite. But then the food science world is awash with such confusing conclusions and contradictions. One week we are told of1-Octanol the powerful antioxidant capabilities of some common food ingredient or other and the next we learn that, in actual fact, there is really not much in it at all. To obtain the said benefits, you would probably need to eat more 5-Fluorouracilthan a normal human stomach could possibly accommodate every day for the next x years. So what or whom to believe? Perhaps the other important question we should be asking ourselves, commented Peter Doyle, speaking at a recent p-Toluenesulfonic Acid SCI meeting at Syngenta*s Jealott*s Hill research station in Bracknell, UK, in November 2010, is why we are funding some of this food health research anyway? At a time when the world is arguably facing the biggest ever food crisis, with a population expected to hit 9bn people on the planet by 2050, surely, this money would be better diverted to tackling the real food challenge: how to prevent us all from starving in the Adapalene next four decades? Global agricultural productivity growth 每 the amount of food generated per acre of land 每 is currently declining, Atorvastatin Calcium down from 4%/year during the 1960s每1980s to 1% today 每 and including only 0.6% growth in the EU. Researchers blame a lack of research investment as the cause of this decline. Food health is undoubtedly an important issue, but surely we need to make sure there is enough food to go around first. 6:44 AM - 1/19/2011 - comments {0} - post commentChitosanSo would youLoratadineprefer to have the bad news first or the good news? Last week, the web news resource Terra Daily carried the report that &experts say rare earthsHydrobromic acid headed for 2011 supply crunch*. Chitosan The following day came the cheering news that &rare earth elements in US not so rare*. So what*s the truth? According to Australian experts, demand for rare earths has soared as a result of the popularity of smartphones and low power light bulbs, just as China 每 which produces 95% of them 每 is limiting exports in order to satisfy its own domestic market. &We have a classic supply and demand crisis. Under normal conditions the global demand exceeds supply in about 2011,* Professor Brent McInnes from Curtin University is quoted as saying. The US Geological Survey (USGS), however, now estimates that there are roughly 13m t of rare earth elements (REE) in the US alone 每 the first time that the organisation has carried out a nationwide estimate of these elements. While acknowledging that many of the sites have yet to be proven, the USGS notes that at recent domestic consumption rates of around 10, 000 t/year these deposits have the potential to meet US demands for several years into the future. 6:44 AM - 1/19/2011 - comments {0} - post commentUREASince C&I first Sodium pyrophosphate anhydrousreported the steep increase in bed bug infestation in the US that was highlighted back in 2009 at the L-LysineAmerican Chemical Society Spring meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah (C&I 2009, 9, 4), these rapidly reproducing insects Carboxymethylcellulose sodiumhave remained a major issue in the US. This is particularly in L(+)-Glutamine New York, with even the luxurious Waldorf Astoria hotel on Park Avenue the subject of at least three law suits from former guests who have suffered from bed bug bites. One former guest is suing for $10m after the bugs Urea caused multiple serious injuries during a stay back in 2007. The litigant is claiming that she will require plastic surgery to treat permanent scars on her face, hence the size of the claim. According to the US National Barium nitratePest Management Association, bed bugs cost American industry $258m in 2009. But the UK is not immune to the Tetrahydrofuranproblem; according to a recent report in The Sunday Times newspaper, UK pest management company Rentokil says there has been a 24% increase in call-outs to tackle the problem during 2010. Back in Utah, the banning of DDT and the focus on the development of species-specific insecticides were blamed Zinc sulfate, monohydrate for the bed bug pandemic that appears to be affecting every major city in the world. The problem centres on the extremely broad spread of the various species of bed bug so even when an infestation has been eliminated a chance encounter with a single bed bug on a train or plane, or a restaurant seat or hotel bed, can set off the whole process of infestation. Is this all an unintended consequence of the pressure from environmental groups to 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde force regulatory authorities around the world to reduce pesticide use or is it just a factor of humanity*s move from the countryside to the cities? One thing is certain, just like the manufacturer of the perfect mousetrap, the public will beat a path to the door of the first life science company to come up with a universal bed bug killer that can be used as often as required without diclofenac sodium the need for warnings and precautionary advice that exceed all the available printable space on the final product pack. 6:40 AM - 1/19/2011 - comments {0} - post comment |
