The management consultancy McKinsey has recently looked at the challenges and past lessons that do perhaps need to be revisited. AS McKinsey points out, the appetite for joint ventures waned in the early 2000s as foreign investment restrictions loosened, and many companies found the establishment of their own entirely new Chinese companies or the outright purchase of an existing Chinese company was more attractive. Recently, however, McKinsey believes that Chinese companies are less willing to be acquired as a result of China ¡¯s rapid growth and joint ventures have once again become the attractive entry route. There are of course some provisos ¨C and they should come as no surprise as they are generally relevant to the formation of any joint venture. One of the most important aspects of any joint venture is that both partners share the same strategic or commercial ambitions; without this common purpose, different priorities in terms of investment and lack of cooperation, for example, can result. And yet a WMS solution could help companies demonstrate to third party Responsible Care certifiers that many of the pertinent safety and environmental policies were not only in place, but always enforced. Why aren¡¯t WMS solutions more widely used? For chemical distributors, one reason is that the great majority of them are small, with less than $100 million in revenues, and their facilities also tend to be small, usually less than 50,000 square feet. They also have far fewer workers than most distribution centers (perhaps 5 at a blending warehouse and often only 2 in a Factory Pack warehouse), with limited need for more sophisticated picking strategies. They also tend to have far fewer shipments than a typical distribution center. One manager mentioned having only 15 to 18 daily shipments. In contrast, 4-Acetamidophenol large global chemical manufacturers use WMS, Terminal Management, and automation to enforce compliance while streamlining operational processes. They view their supply chain sustainability initiatives in the logistics area as a way to help protect their reputation, minimize liability, and improve customer service, all while reducing costs. | ||

| Managers must prepare for a Glycerin number of inspections. A local fire Potassium hydroxide department will put a facility through an annual Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) inspection that takes about three hours to L(+)-Ascorbic acid complete. Similar inspections are conducted by the state (in New Jersey, for example, it is every three years). Sprinklers need to be flow tested once a year, fire alarms need to be inspected by an outside certified company at least annually, and respirators also need to get inspected. All chemical companies need to have Master Data Safety Sheets (MSDS). In some states, Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate even if you have electronic MSDSs, paper copies are also required. And companies that blend chemicals need to have their tanks inspected for corrosion on a regular basis (every 5 years for mineral oil, for example). There are also training rules. Forklifts operators need to be recertified (i.e., retrained) every 3 years. Floor level workers also need Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) identification and handling training every 3 years, and discharge and clean up (hazardous waste) training once a year. They have 2 drills per year where they must evacuate the warehouse to meet Homeland Security regulations. Managers must also conduct background checks before hiring new warehouse employees; make sure that returnable containers are cleaned correctly (based on the type of chemical in the container); make sure the proper processes for stacking containers are Magnesium oxidefollowed; and ensure that carriers have sufficient insurance (this was one manager¡¯s biggest headache). | ||

| Last year, I interviewed Calcium carbonate several warehouse managers in the Acetic acid chemical industry to learn more about Calcium chloride their operations and how they are using supply chain execution (SCE) technology. Chemical manufacturers, distributors, and logistics service providers (LSPs) all operate chemical warehouses which differ in complexity. At one end of the spectrum are distributors (or LSPs that handle chemicals on behalf of manufacturing clients) who receive containers, usually drums, from suppliers and then reship them when an order is placed. These distributors are known as Factory Pack Distributors. At the other end of the spectrum are manufacturers, distributors, and, in some cases, LSPs Citric acid that receive bulk chemical shipments, often in tank cars, and then repackage and/or blend these chemicals into a variety of different containers. If you were to walk into a more complex chemical warehouse, you would find racks filled with drums, but also other forms of containers specially designed for chemicals. You would see workers using forklifts, but also wearing various forms of protective equipment (aprons, special gloves, even air masks) when working at the filling and blending stations. What was most surprising to me was how much more important compliance was for these managers than productivity. There are many complexities associated with compliance. First of all, different classes of chemicals need to be segregated, so flammables need to be stored in a different zone than oxidizers, corrosives, and so forth. Chemical warehouses also need to be specially designed for safety. If you have flammable chemicals, you need to have a designated room that contains a sprinkler system and wide aisles. | My colleague Asish Ghosh has retired¡ªfor the second time. Ten years ago he announced his first retirement, got his retirement party, and a few weeks Chemical Suppliers later we called him back in to help us with a quick turnaround project. He then worked part time for another decade, Chemical News retired again last week, and got his second retirement party. I¡¯m not sure what the moral of this story is, except, perhaps, that two parties are better than one. Asish¡¯s last publication for ARC,Esfenvalerate assuming he is not shooting for a third retirement party, is a strategic report titled ¡°Chemical Industry Trends, Challenges and Opportunities¡± (available to ARC clients only). There is a section in the report on ¡°green chemistry¡± that has Cyromazine implications for chemical supply chains, including companies that manufacture, use, distribute, or transport chemicals. Green chemistry ¡°efficiently utilizes renewable raw materials, eliminates waste, and avoids the use of toxic and or hazardous raw materials, intermediates, and products.¡± There are twelve principles of green chemistry, some of which only make sense if you have a degree in chemistry. But the core concepts behind these principles are the following: In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is promoting the ¡°research, development, and implementation of innovative chemical technologies that accomplish pollution prevention in a scientifically sound and cost-effective manner.¡± Further, ¡°the design of greener, more sustainable products and processes has become a top priority for many chemical manufacturers.¡± According to Asish, if you go to the websites of the leading chemical companies, you¡¯ll find ¡°green chemistry¡± messaging all over them. It is a truism of supply chain management that once you design a supply chain ¨C including the product design, the manufacturing processes, the sourcing strategy, and the manufacturing and distribution networks ¨C you have locked in a very high percentage of the costs. The Chemicals industry welcomes the healthy ageing innovation partnership, as it plays a major product role in the health sector - namely medical care and the development of innovative materials. The industry forms the root of high-tech solutions such as biocompatible and bio-resorbant materials, early illness diagnosis, targeted and controlled drug delivery, self-cleaning surfaces and health monitoring systems. ¡°The Chemical Network sector stands out as a solution provider to major societal challenges,¡± said Gernot Klotz, head of Cefic research and innovation. ¡°The industry¡¯s unique position is a natural fit for a leadership role that frames the partnerships.¡± An innovation partner The Chemical Database sector in Europe has a strategic, economic and social role to play in innovation. Its long-term track record in generating new products and processes drives innovation not only within the 449 billion European chemical industry but also within many other sectors.
