Apple's Options for North Carolina Fuel Cell Installation Point to Bloom Energy
While Apple has received a fair amount of attention for its planned solar farm at its massive data center in Maiden, Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case, the company publicly disclosed less than two weeks ago that it will also be installing the largest non-utility fuel cell farm in the United States to help power the facility.
GigaOm has assessed Apple's options for the 5-megawatt facility, determining that Bloom Energy appears to be Apple's partner in the project. Bloom, which is based in Sunnyvale, California near Chanel iPhone 4 Case headquarters, is also said to already have "a few" of its fuel cells in operation on Apple's campus.
Bloom offers boxes capable of supplying 100 kW, which could translate into 50 Bloom Boxes being installed at Apple¡¯s data center. Bloom has been in negotiations for similarly large-sized deals in the past, such as its negotiations in Delaware to build a 30 MW fuel cell farm (300 Bloom Boxes), and it has already installed 12 Bloom Boxes at Adobe¡¯s campus in San Jose, Calif.
Apple is also touting the fact that its fuel cells will be run on biogas, and Bloom has substantial experience selling biogas-based fuel cells. Both Adobe and eBay are running their Bloom fuel cells on biogas. Bloom has also been the go-to fuel cell maker for Internet, telecom and computing giants¡¯ experiments with fuel cells.
The report notes that Chanel iPhone 4S Case options for fuel cell partners are relatively few, with UTC Power's larger fuel cell boxes not cleanly adding up to Apple's stated 5-megawatt capacity for the facility and FuelCell Energy specifically denying that it is working with Apple.
Apple is clearly interested in pursuing alternative energy sources for its facilities, and data centers are popular laboratories for such projects given their energy requirements and their typically rural locations that make it cheaper to dedicate land to energy production. The company already touts that its facilities in Austin, Sacramento, Munich, and Cork are powered by 100% renewable energy sources as part of a broad effort to reduce minimize its environmental impact across its facilities and throughout its products' life cycles. |

iPhone 5 delayed as Steve Jobs quits?
| The man who dragged Apple out of the doldrums and up to the top of the world in the space of 14 years, Steve Jobs, has quit as company CEO – so how will this affect the iPhone 5 release date? We take a closer look.
Steve Jobs is no longer the CEO of Apple. In his open resignation letter, Jobs revealed that he “could no longer meet [his] duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO” – an evident reference to his persistent health problems that have seen him take a couple of periods of medical leave in recent years.
The man who helped found Apple in 1976, was forced out in 1984 and regained control in 1997 has been the driving force behind one of the world’s biggest and most profitable companies. He’s also the reason we all excitedly check the news feeds every morning to see if the iPhone 5′s coming out yet.

iPhone 5 delay?
So integral is Steve Jobs to Apple that it might make you wonder what sort of impact his resignation will have on the release of the iPhone 5. The simple answer is: not a jot.
For one thing, Jobs isn’t resigning from Apple – only the day-to-day responsibilities of the demanding CEO role. He will still have a heavy say in how Apple proceeds as company Chairman and director – an influential role that was confirmed swiftly by a grateful Apple board.
Another reason is that Steve Jobs has already given his recommendation for a replacement, which has also been accepted by the board. Indeed, the process of replacing Jobs was instigated long ago, as evidenced by the following exerpt from Jobs’s resignation letter: “As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.”
Tim Cook – ideal candidate
Taking control of Apple will not be difficult for Tim Cook in the slightest. Back in 2004, he took the reigns as CEO for two months while Jobs recovered from major surgery. Since Steve Jobs took his last medical leave of absence back in January, Cook has been acting as COO, which in Jobs’s own works made him “responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations”. That particular shift didn’t seem to do the iPad 2 any harm, did it?
All of this shows that among Steve Jobs’s many talents, his chief one is probably building teams – putting intelligent people in position and letting them do what they do best. This means his legacy at Apple will be a strong future, starting with an extremely strong iPhone 5 launch.
The mains questions will be: how will Apple’s direction change longer term (we’re talking iPhone 6 or even 7 here)? And will Jobs be able to continue with his inspirational presentations? And perhaps most importantly of all: if Tim Cook takes over the presentational responsibilities too, will he wear a turtleneck? |

Motorola Droid Bionic getting the jump on iPhone 5
| t’s been a long road to release for the Motorola Droid Bionic, and there have been a number of bumps (not to mention a complete face lift) along the way. But reports claim that it’s now ready for a September 8 release, which should give it some vital breathing space before the iPhone 5 launch. Read on for details.
Motorola Droid Bionic – the next superphone
The Motorola Droid Bionic was first announced in January with a view to an early Q2 release. However, here we are staring down the barrel of Q4 and there’s no such device available on the market.
This is frustrating, as it promises to be a beast of an Android handsets. It’ll come with a 1GHz dual-core processor (likely to be a TI OMAP number), a 4.3-inch qHD screen and an 8-megapixel camera. It’ll be a genuine rival to the Samsung Galaxy S 2 and HTC Sensation at the top of the smartphone tree.
The trouble is, a certain other dual-core smartphone is set to join the fray very soon, and no one wants to be caught in the streets when it finally rolls in to town. Yep – the iPhone 5 is coming, with many sources pointing to an October 7 release.
We previously considered the possibility that a launch this close to the iPhone 5 might damage the Motorola Droid Bionic‘s chances, but there’s also the possibility that a solid month’s head start could be enough to make it a success.

September 8 launch
Fortunately, a couple of US sources have spotted definite signs that the Motorola Droid Bionic will be out in a week.
Android Central recently uncovered a Costco listing for the Motorola Droid Bionic that put it down for a September 8 release. Stock should be rolling into the US retailer’s stores from tomorrow.
In addition, Droid-life has discovered a couple of pieces of documentation from a US operator that confirms this September 8 launch date.
One of these listings also points out a new snippet of information on the device itself – it’ll weigh a rather chunky 159 grams. That’s about 10 grams heavier than the not-exactly-light HTC Sensation.
One month to make hay
The important point is: the Motorola Droid Bionic looks set to have one month of solid sales before the iPhone 5 j***ernaut steams in and spoils everyone else’s fun. Unlike Nokia with its first Windows Phone, and new parent Google with its Google Nexus Prime (which is likely to be provided by Samsung), Motorola will get its new offering to market before all the attention switches to Apple’s latest offering.
It’s a shame we won’t be seeing the Motorola Droid Bionic here in the UK at such an early point, but strong US sales will surely make Motorola consider a launch across the pond. As such, we should all be thankful for this September 8 confirmation.

Preorders of Apple's iPhone 4 break Verizon sales record in 2 hours
|
Verizon on Friday declared that presales of the iPhone 4 exceeded any other launch in the company's history in just the first two hours, though the carrier declined to provide actual sales figures. "This was an exciting day," said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless. "In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history. "And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story. It is gratifying to know that our customers responded so enthusiastically to this exclusive offer -- designed to reward them for their loyalty." Though Verizon didn't provide any specific sales figures, analyst Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets issued a brief note to investors in which he said the "limited" pre-order availability was likely restricted to less than 100,000. For comparison, the Motorola Droid, when it launched in 2009, was estimated to have sold 100,000 in its first weekend, while the GSM iPhone 4 sold 1.7 million in its first three days of availability last June. Verizon and Apple stopped taking preorders at 8:10 p.m. on Thursday, just over 17 hours after existing Verizon customers were first able to place an order. It marked the most successful sales day in the company's history. "I am proud of our employees who worked tirelessly to strengthen and scale our systems, enabling unprecedented customer orders through our website," Mead said. "Overall, it was a very good day." He also reminded customers that they will have another opportunity to order the CDMA iPhone 4 when it launches on Feb. 10 at 7 a.m. local time in Apple's U.S. retail stores and more than 2,000 Verizon Wireless Communication Stores. On Feb. 9, all qualified customers will be able to order a Verizon iPhone 4 through the Apple online store for delivery or in-store pick-up beginning Feb. 10. "Yesterday's launch set the pace for next week when we open up sales to everyone across America," Mead said.
